چکیده
AIM The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of citicoline administration on epidural fibrosis which is a frequent complication of lumbar disc surgery with no effective treatment or preventive surgical technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty Sprague-Dawley female rats undergoing L4-5 right hemilaminotomy and annular fenestration were arranged in three groups: rats in Group 1 (control group) and Group 2 (topical citicoline group) were applied 0,9% saline and 100 μM citicoline on surgical area, respectively, while rats in Group 3 (systemic citicoline group) received 600 μmol/kg citicoline intraperitoneally. Rats were sacrificed four weeks later and their vertebral colons were removed en bloc. Groups were evaluated according to histological criteria and results were compared using statistical tools. RESULTS Compared with control group, significantly less epidural fibrosis, dural adhesion, fibroblast cell density, foreign body reaction, and medulla spinalis retraction were observed in groups treated with topical and systemic citicoline (groups 2 and 3) (p < 0,001). No significant difference was found with regard to measured parameters between two treatment groups (p > 0,05). CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates for the first time in the literature that citicoline may be effective for preventing postoperative epidural fibrosis. However, its mechanism of action and clinical effectiveness must be further investigated.

Effect of Etanercept on the Formation of Epidural Fibrosis in an Experimental Model.
AIM To investigate the effects of local and systemic administration of etanercept on the formation of epidural fibrosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-eight rats were randomly divided into four equal groups (Control, SpongostanTM, Local etanercept and Systemic etanercept) and laminectomy was performed between T11 and L1 in all rats. SpongostanTM was soaked with saline (0.1 mg/kg), local etanerc...
متن کاملBlockade of Opioid Receptors Located in the Rat Nucleus Cuneiformis Reduced the Antinociceptive Responses of Local But not Systemic Administration of Morphine in Formalin Test
ABSTRACTPrevious studies have shown the role of opioid receptors located in the nucleus cuneiformis (CnF) in acute pain, but not in chronic pain models. In the present study, we have determined that possible effects of these receptors at the CnF on both early and late phases of formalin test following local and systemic morphine administration. Each rat was given a subcutaneous 50-μl injection ...

Background: Post-operative fibrosis related pains and functional anomalies can be serious problems for patients. Radiotherapy (RT) could inhibit fibrosis which may occurs post- operation especially following laminectomy. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effect of peri-operative RT on the prevention of post-operative fibrosis and scar formation on rats. Materials and Method...

متن کاملAttenuation of Morphine Physical Dependence and Blood Levels of Cortisol by Central and Systemic Administration of Ramelteon in Rat
Background: Chronic administration of morphine cause physical dependence but the exact mechanism of this phenomenon remains unclear. The aim of this study is the assessment of systemic and intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of ramelteon (a melatonin receptor agonist) on morphine physical dependence. Methods: 88 adult male rats were divided into 2 major groups, namely “systematic” and ...
